What to wear for your newborn session

Newport RI Newborn + Family Photographer

You’ve just had a baby, you’re still recovering, adjusting, learning to be a mama to a new life. Reading all the things, feeling overwhelmed at the amount of opinions from friends, family, the internet, strangers. Whew. It’s absolutely exhausting. No matter if this is your first birth or you’re a seasoned pro there’s still that adjustment period.

Let me help take one worry off your plate: what to wear to your newborn session.

  1. You should dress like you.

I feel like this is the most important part. You should dress and look like you. Just as your baby is perfect in every way, you, as a mother, are beautiful. You don’t stop being you when you become a mom. Sure many things change, parts are softer than they were before, clothes may fit a little differently, but:

you are still you, and you should feel like yourself.

Choose clothing that fits right now, that you feel beautiful in, and that feels like your style. There’s no need to try to look like every mama on instagram.

If you want to wear a dress, or jeans, have your hair down or up, it’s totally up to you! Whatever makes you feel the most like yourself, especially in this pivotal season of your family.

2. Chose clothing that coordinates.

There are a few things that will make a photo stand out (in a good way!), and its clothing that coordinates but doesn’t match exactly. When you’re considering your clothing choices, pull mama’s outfit first. As you’re preparing for your photos grab the outfit you want to wear, and lay it out. Next you’ll pull something for your spouse/partner, then the rest of the family participating in the photos. Grab colors that go well together, maybe some different textures depending on the season (sweaters, vests, etc).

3. Avoid Large/all over patterns

Plaids, lots of stripes, camo, large florals all have their places, but if you’re looking for photos that don’t scream out the decade you took them, I recommend going with solid colors with neutrals thrown in. An easy way to get some inspiration for color schemes is to jump on Pinterest. Search for ‘family photo color palette’ or something similar. You’ll get lots of ideas for how to match colors. We don’t want every person in your family matching. You’ll all get swallowed up into one big chunk of color or pattern when we want to see each and every family member!

4. Make sure everyone’s clothing fits.

Making sure your clothing fits will help you feel more confident and comfortable in front of the camera. This goes for your older children too! If they’re trying to pull collars out of their faces, or keep their pants from falling when they move, they aren’t going to be able to relax, and you won’t either.

5. Try not to stress!

What we’re looking to capture during your newborn session is the feelings of having a new baby in your family. I’m more focused on helping you feel the connection between you and your baby when you look back on your images. After its all said and done, it honestly doesn’t matter too much what you’re wearing. What will be important is how you feel, that’s what will be communicated the most in the final images.

You have so much on your plate as a brand new mama. You are beautiful. Your kids think you’re beautiful. I think you’re beautiful. Don’t forget that.
